How I Cope with the Stress of Online School

The stress of online school for me personally can be at times overwhelming. I, like other students, spend hours sitting in front of the screen, either studying or watching lecture material. I came to the conclusion earlier this year that I needed a method to destress and unwind during the day to prevent myself from getting overwhelmed.

Now that the weather is getting a little nicer out, I try to get outside more often and incorporate more sunlight in my life. The first thing that I have done is to write out a schedule for my daily activities. Then, when I am about halfway through my school day, I stop my work, grab my headphones and head out for my daily walk. I forget about school, and all of my other responsibilities for 30 minutes to an hour. When I get back from my walk, I usually feel refreshed and better able to concentrate on my work.

Another way I try to unwind is by going out for a run. I usually do this on the weekends, when I have much more time. I spend about 45 minutes to an hour going around my neighbourhood and appreciating the way exercise is positively impacting my health. I definitely understand that not everyone is able get outside or has a safe area to run. Instead, what can be done is try to incorporate sunlight to our lives. I do this by studying or eating my breakfast/lunch near a window.

This school year has been very stressful, but I find that getting outside for me personally has truly helped me get over some of the stress associated with school, life, and the pandemic.
